Passage Master: Chapter 2 the law of the few
1) Pg 31 – 2 paragraph; This is important because Paul revere at ten o’clock at night jumped on his horse and went to every house near the Boston harbor and informed everyone that the British are coming he covered almost 13 miles in 2 hours. He was spreading the word and soon after many of the colonial leaders took action. This new spread like a virus because neighbors were telling other neighbors. Word of Mouth Epidemic.
2) Pg 32- paragraph 2 – it talks more about how word of mouth effects how communication is passed on and received by other and how word of mouth and communication can make a big effect.
3) Pg 33 – paragraph 1 and two. – Malcolm talks about how being at the right place at the right time can have a huge effect on the person who is giving the new. William Dawes was a man like Paul Revere he went out to inform that the British were coming but he went into a community that liked the British while Paul Revere went to a place where people didn’t like them. Paul Revere had natural social gifts in informing people about the fact the British were coming. The new Paul Revere gave had tipped and everyone new and started to take action while Williams didn’t. This was the difference between the two men. This is also an example of the Law of the Few.
4) Pg 34 – Paragraph 1 – Malcolm is saying that we don’t give credit to some people who are important and that we should. He calls them special kinds of people, they are known as the connectors, mavens and Salesman.
5) Pg 37 – Paragraph 1- Malcolm talks about how everyone is linked in just six steps and how that is important that some people take few steps than others. They are the special few. (linked with others).
6) Pg 38- Paragraph 1- Malcolm talks about how social circles are like being in a connection of people. They are all linked to one another. Malcolm says that connectors are very important because they affect people around the world and especially useful in the business world. Connectors bring the world together.
a. Paragraph two- Presents what make someone a connector.
7) Pg 41 paragraph 1- Malcolm’s talks about how when he took statistics he discovered that older and high classed (high paid) mostly white folks have more connections and are linked with more people than kids and college students also people who aren’t as paid highly and are poor. Ages make a difference on how many people you get to know.
8) Pg 45- Paragraph 3- Talks about how acquaintances are not remember or paid attention to as much as people who you feel more connected to. There is a purpose in meeting people it make friends and make other connection with other people that they are also linked to.
9) Pg 46- Paragraph 1- He talks about how Horchow who is a man with many connections and natural talents in socializing and meeting people has a “weak tie” is was sociologists call it because he is friendly with people though has a causal connection. He seems happy with having a weak tie.
Summarizer: In Chapter two so far Malcolm has present the reader how word of mouth epidemic is important because it can also spread like a virus just like the historical event when Paul Revere had spread messages to acquaintances around the Boston Harbor that the British were coming. He talks about how Connector, mavens, and Salesman are important. Connectors are the main idea that he was talking about in the first few pages of the second chapter. He describes how the connectors help us link up the world. They have a special gift in socializing and bringing people together. He gave an example of a famous director/businessman named Roger Horchow and how is has a talent of connecting people around the world and linking people to his business. He thinks that he doesn’t really pay too much to his but to people he actually care his close friends. He seems to have a “weak tie” which means that he is friendly with people though has a causal connection with people even to his acquaintances.
This relates back to the importance of a single event because Paul Reveres mouth epidemic affected society by telling his neighbors around the Boston harbor that the British are coming when people knew about this they started to tell other people. Then the colonial leaders started to get informed and they started to get for what is the most famous event in history “America revolution “. Paul Revere knew many of the people and sociable and was more effective and mounts everyone’s effort in making a militia. While William Dawes didn’t know the right people to be connected too and tell people that the British were coming. This can impact the decision made today because if you can go around telling people about an important event going on it spreads very quick most people usually talk about social events and one person tell one another and so on then everyone gets informed about that certain event. Also knowing about one certain event and the right person can have a huge impact in society today.
è Have to relate back to the essential question

Ø Wants to solve other people problems and they have to help other people and by helping others
Ø Paul revere was a maven and british because he was a spy but also a connector because he was a knew lots of people and he knew so much knowledge about the british
1) 1) How did Rod Steiger connect to history in the past and the present in his career’s or career of acting? How did it make an impact in society?
2) Why do you think that Malcolm Gladwell thinks that Rod Steiger is the best connector he is ever acting world.
a. He seems to know everything
3) How does having experience in many different jobs make you a good connector?
4) How do connectors find ways to get decent jobs and how does the “weak tie” take effect in this idea. Do you think that the weak ties are stronger and better than the having strong ties?
a. Weak ties are stronger than strong ties. When you get to know more acquaintances
5) Do you think that if you are close to a connector that you will be as smart and wealthy as them?
a.
6)
Do you think that having a high paying job will affect how a person can become a maven?
à Doesn’t really need to because if they just want to help others and give advice forms others. They high paying jobs might give more opportunities to have a better connection of people but not for mavens because they can just go on the internet and look up stuff and get knowledge the idea they are conveying to people.
7) What is the different between a real maven and a person who works in the market place
8) Do you think that a connector has the same thoughts and knowledge as a maven does or vis versa?
a. They will have much knowledge on prices and stuff and connector will know lots about the different world and the cultures of other country’s rather they won’t know much about
9) What sets mavens apart from other people?
a. Mavens have more knowledge and have talent
10) Think about Paul Revere he was a connector but do you think that he is also a maven? Can you be two characteristics at once?
a. Yes because he is both because he is able to connect with people and know lots of people while he is a spy and has knowledge of when the brutish were coming and was a connecter because he was able to spread the news with other
11) How do you think they get attention of other people? Do you think that mavens have a different way of getting attention than connectors do?
a. Mavens are always to convince people, mavens know everything. Mavens recommended going someplace to go and the author was happy about it he told other people and then a maven tell someone and then that person tells it to someone else.
12)
13)
What Is the difference from spreading news to someone rather than do it the ways connectors do? Word of mouth epidemic?
a. Connectors will be able to connect with other people while mavens are really able to spread it to other people who are and most people will take there information.
14) What Quality’s do you think makes a good connector? (after talking about this)
a. Connector: social, understand, and fit with other people and connect and relate to whole bunch of different people. Relate to these people and understand with them. They are like quantity not really quality.
b. Maven: Don’t need to have a large amount of friends, they don’t need to share a whole bunch of people and talk to connectors who will talk to other people. Relates to today mavens talk to other and then connectors talk to other people about an certain idea. People who are able to advice thing to large groups of people and have quality. When the connector talks to a maven and discuss about something they talk to the connector will spread it around.

Summarizer: In this chapter Malcolm Gladwell discusses that having experience in different jobs can make a person be a better connector. He tells a story about this lady who worked at many different jobs because she switched majors and she meets many people. It was almost like she was experimenting the different jobs that she tried out and tries to figures out the job that best fits in meeting and connecting with new people. He talks about how connectors are even good at talking to people outside of their own race and know how to interact with them. He then goes on talking about how weak ties are important for connectors to have because the more acquaintances a connector has then he or she will be able to meet more than one person but not get to close to them and stick with the whole time so that they are not meeting with other people. He then says that if a normal person who really isn’t a connector just hangs outs out with a connector will get wealthy and be like the connector. They are just really good at social epidemic. He then talks about how Paul revere is also a maven because he had knowledge and knew how to help people and convey his ideas toward people while also being a good connector and knowing everyone and where to get information. He talks about how maven are people who just want to help you and give you good advice and have very good knowledge about the matters that they are conveying to the person. He compares them to a person who just work at the market place who don’t really give you a good deal and aren’t there to really help you while mavens are the opposite. The importance of a single event in this idea while also connecting this to today society is that a person might have meet a maven who seems to know everything and know where to go to get the best deal. Analyzing events and individual impact decisions made today because if a person wants to buy something and he/ she doesn’t really know where to go to if that person know a maven he / she might ask the maven where the best place is to get a good deal on the item.

è Essential qualities
o Ego
o Empathy
§ understanding and entering into another's feelings when you
o Sesame street
§ November 10, 1969 was when it first appeared on television
§ This program was to help and educate little children.
§ Many physiologists did many studies a program that describes if the little kids are actually paying attention to the educational part of the puppets. Though many seemed to not be looking at the educational part but on how Oscar looked like.
o Blue clues
§ September 8, 1996 first aired
§ It was also an educational t.v show that was like the sticky ness factor.
§ Enertained many children.

§ Educated and became a big show that many kids watched to learn.

Connector: The salesman and the sticky factor connects to today society because even today when people go to the stores they are greeted by people and hear commercials everywhere that deal with sales and saying what this certain product can do and how it can affect many people in society to buy something. They are very persuasive. Most salesman today have the quality’s to be a good salesman they are very social and they want the person to trust them that the product is worth trying and using. The stickiness factor is also a big idea that affects people to do something. Like for example many of the T.V shows today are addicting and songs when you listen to a song that you enjoy then it sticks to you because you know all the words to it and get excited when the song comes on the radio and you start to sing to the song.
Summarizer: The ideas in these chapters that are in the book near the end of chapter two. Malcolm talks about how Mavens are not persuaders they are only there to help, educate, and motivate you. To be a Maven is to be a teacher. Mavens have Knowledge almost about everything. Though for a social epidemic to start people are actually going to have to be persuaded to do something. He uses the example of the Hush puppies. He describes Mavens like data banks. They provide the message; while the connectors are just the “social glue” as Malcolm describes them in which the connectors just spread the word. Though the third important groups of people that are critical in adding the tipping point are called the Salesman. They are people who have the quality’s to persuade someone also the fact that they are usually very optimistic as Malcolm describes one of the main characters in the salesman part. The stickiness factor is another idea that Malcolm presented because he said that watching a certain show can affect the person because if he really like the show he will start to get sticked to it and it causes the stickiness factor because he/ she will watch it a lot more. The importance of the single event is to be able to learn why there is the stickiness factor and why there is a salesman to persuade people. Many can learn how to persuade and why salesmen are good at persuading. This can help decisions made today because people have the right to watch something that is addicting and people are able to know if they want to buys that certain product from a salesman.
What is the importance of a single event? How can analyzing events or individuals impact decisions made today?

Connector: This idea connects of sticknesss connects to today society because the more that an idea is opened up and how people can learn and take ideas from the shows that didn’t work and combine it to make the show a better and attract people. Also the idea of power of context and the tipping point might help criminals to not do crimes and to get a job. Connects to otday society people who have no jobs tend to do more crimes.
Summarizer: In the last few chapters of chapter 3 Malcolm finishes talking about the power of stickiness. He describes how Sesame Street was just too advanced in vocabulary and the ideas for little preschool children to understand and so it didn’t really stick to them in learning or being educated through the show. While Sesame Street tried to make the low income people to help teach and focus on educating their children on watching Sesame Street and they wanted to make the adults involve this is why the Sesame Street show seemed to have a more advanced vocabulary. Though while he compares them to Blue Clues. The director and maker of Blue Clues seem to have an even more stickiness than the show that Sesame Street had. Blue Cues just took certain ideas that Sesame Street had and made Blue clues and even more sticker. The Blue Clue episodes use preschool vocabulary and Steve who is the host of the show who usually plays dumb and gives a long pause to make sure that the preschools have time to think about the answer there thinking of. Most of the times the clues lead up to the answers so he breaks down the ideas to get to the answer in which the kids can answer and all of them can participate in show. He says that repetition is the best way kids remember something also the children love to repeat, rather than adult who don’t like repetition. CTW using the James Earl Jones effect was the idea of repetition that the show Blue’s Clues used to help stick the learning in the preschooler’s minds. The power of context is the idea that is focused in chapter 4. He starts out on a story about a man Goetz who shoot four young men because the society was bad at the time of the 80’s. He also describes how crimes are cause because there really isn’t a tipping point and the economy isn’t good. He then describes how physiologists think that crimes are cause because the criminals have a terrible childhood. This event helps make decisions today because when a director or producer learns how to make the stickiness factor take an effect in society.
Diary 6
Summarizer: In this middle of this chapter Malcolm describes how emotions can say many words to describe how a person feels or the way the person might act towards a certain idea. Also how emotional can influence a persons decision in a certain type of environment. He used an example of a scientist named Philip Zambardo who decided to make a mock prison in which he is going to experiment by using the volunteers to see how the cells and how the people act like in prison or in solitary confinement and have some people be the guards and some people be the prisoners and Philip would experiment the emotions and how tense the prisoners acted like when they were in the prison for some period of time. Though it was suppose to go to two weeks it went only to six days because two people went home from emotional issues and depression due to the experiment. What Philip was trying to conclude in this experiment was that emotions can affect lots of people decisions and the decisions of other people. He describes how pressure and being limited can cause a result in cheating rather it’s at home or at school of you have the answer cheat to something you might not do the work and just cheat off of it. Boys tend to cheat more than girls. Though the importance of this event is that many people can learn why adults and older kids tend to cheat more than younger kids and why they do this action. Also how emotions can spread and cause many issues depending on the situation the person is in. Analyzing this even this can impact a person decisions today because cheating or handling emotions can affect many people if it taken to a dangerous level. Emotions can influence a person to do something such as cheating if a person feels overwhelm the person might cheat and it might cause terrible consequences.
What is the importance of a single event? How can analyzing events or individuals impact decisions made today?

Connector: This idea of emotions and how it connects to society also the emotions can lead to cheating or maybe good or bad ideas and actions. At Fredericksburg Academy the school has an honor code in which states many rules but in this case its cheating. When a person feels overwhelm that person might be tempted to cheat. The person may cheat if he/ or she has a take home test assignment. This can connect to bad consequences and that’s a small action that can led to big consequences such as OSS. Though I the big world cheating on a company can lead that person to jail maybe because of the emotion of stress that may lead the person to cheat.

Summary: In this chapter Malcolm talks about how a story can make a tipping point in many societies. And a story can speak many words. Also how the 150 rule can make a big difference on how friendships and businesses work. The rule can make a huge difference in how friendships are made because the smaller amount of people you have in a group the more connected and the more a person will know about the other person. While when the groups is larger there will be more debates and more awuatcnitice rather than close friendships. This event can be important because people can learn that big groups people will have a harder time getting along and this impacts decisions’ made today because many people will decide to go by the 150 rule.

Summarizer: In Chapter 6 and middle of Chapter 7 Malcolm is conveying through his examples of why people buy the products. He talks about how persuasion and advertisements/commercials are big factors on the reasons many people the products that are being shown through the commercials. He describes that Innovators are connects to Early adopters and early adopters are connected to so and so. It’s like a link. He says that innovators are like mavens and they are like translators because they take ideas and information from am highly specialized world and translate them into a language we all can understand. Rumors are important because it’s the most contagious of all social messages that can change many views of people and how they think of a person. He then talks about the needle program the people running the program are connectors because they know other people outside of that certain area that people who also sell needles give to. The people who inject heroin give the dirty needles to the people who have clean needles. Innovators also seem to have a different personality than most people because there are known for their different tastes and different ideas that set them apart from other people. In Chapter 7 Malcolm talks about how the Micronesian epidemic is similar to smoking here in America. Many people commit suicide because of little ideas and family personal issues in Micronesia and it became a big deal and many little and teenagers were influenced by the people who also did it. Though smoking here was also the same deal they were influenced by other people who were known to be “cool” and they thought if they smoked they would be “cool.” This event is important to understand and know about because people don’t hear about issues in small countries like Micronesia. Summarizer: Finishing out the rest of the book Malcolm describes how the smoking epidemic is a big issue and that it relates to the suicide epidemic. Though he talks about how the epidemic is usually caused by the social environmental influences impacts a person’s decision to smoke. Those who genes can handle the amount of nictotean is more likely to smoke more than a person who isn’t smoking. Also emotions can affect the way a person reacts or acts. Also the fact that there are ways for people to stop smoking and debates rather the product is contagious and sticky or if it’s just like a cold and it can be cured. This can event is important to know because many people can learn from the mistakes and know why certain smokers smoke and how emotions and lifestyle, also environmental influences play a big role in how many people react. This can make an impact in someone’s because decisions are important and if you don’t if can affect you in the long term.
